Shallow waters
The Bodden are a chain of shallow waters between the Fischland-Darss-Zingst peninsula and the mainland. The water is a mixture of Baltic Sea water and the fresh water from the watercourses, such as the rivers Recknitz and Barthe. It has a low salinity and is called brackish water.
Around the Bodden you may experience an interesting and varied nature, parts of which enjoy special protection by the national park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft.
The Bodden landscape offers you many opportunities for active recreation. Apart from cycling and hiking there is, above all, fishing, sailing and wind surfing. The Bodden waters are also used commercially. The reeds provide the ideal and typical, long-lasting thatching material for many houses in the region. Fishermen, although their numbers are declining, go out in their boats and sell their catch fresh from the boat in port. They also deliver to the restaurants.
Cattle graze on Bodden islands with salt grass meadows in a healthy environment.
Their meat is also used for the baby food of a well-known manufacturer.
